CVE-2014-9625Network attack vector

Arbitrary code execution via updater integer truncation

Published Jan 24, 2020 · Updated Aug 6, 2024

Buffer overflow in VideoLAN VLC media player before 2.1.6 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted update status file. On 32-bit builds, GetUpdateFile casts the downloaded file's 64-bit length to 32-bit size_t, allocates a near-zero buffer, then reads up to 0xffffffff bytes into it. Exploitation requires a malicious update response to reach the updater; the overflow occurs before signature verification and can seize control of the VLC process.
