Root escalation via attacker-controlled vx permission metadata
Published Jan 27, 2020 · Updated Aug 6, 2024
Local privilege escalation in SGI Tempo on SGI ICE-X systems allows local users to obtain root access through the setuid vx utility. The /opt/sgi/sgimc/bin/vx binary runs as root, accepts attacker-edited scan metadata, and applies its encoded ownership and mode values to arbitrary files. The utility was observed only on ICE-X admin nodes, which are not normally accessible to nonadministrative users; a low-privileged account on such a node is the required gate.
