Code execution or crash via graph format string
Published Feb 12, 2020 · Updated Aug 6, 2024
Format string injection in RRDtool 1.4.8 and earlier allows remote attackers to crash applications or execute code through rrdtool.graph. The graph binding treats its third argument as image-info format data, while bad_format_imginfo accepts unsafe conversion sequences that native formatting routines interpret against mismatched arguments. Exposure requires an application such as Zenoss Core before 4.2.5 to pass attacker-controlled graph arguments; exploitation crashes that process or executes code in its context.
