Application crash via incorrect H.264 crop offsets
Published Jun 18, 2022 · Updated Apr 15, 2025
An out-of-bounds read in FFmpeg 2.0's H.264 decoder allows attackers to crash media-processing applications via crafted video. The output_frame routine applies crop offsets using H264Context chroma shifts and always iterates three planes instead of using the decoded pixel format's component count and subsampling factors. Exploitation requires an affected application to decode the crafted H.264 content, and the demonstrated consequence is an availability-impacting crash.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
