Application crash via unchecked VMNC rectangles
Published Jun 18, 2022 · Updated Apr 15, 2025
Out-of-bounds write in FFmpeg 2.0 allows context-dependent attackers to crash media-processing applications via crafted VMNC video. decode_hextile in libavcodec/vmnc.c passes attacker-controlled rectangle coordinates and dimensions to paint_rect without first checking that the rectangle fits inside the decoded picture. The victim must open or otherwise process the crafted video; the published impact is a crash with no reported data disclosure or modification.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
