Remote command execution via shell-interpolated email fields
Published Feb 12, 2020 · Updated Aug 6, 2024
Command injection in Hubot Scripts before 2.4.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands through the optional email script. The email.coffee sendEmail function interpolates recipient, subject, message, and sender fields into an echo-and-mail shell command passed to child_process.exec without neutralizing shell metacharacters. The email script must be manually added to Hubot's loaded scripts; a crafted chat email request then runs commands with the Hubot process privileges.
