CVE-2013-3685Public exploit

Local root escalation via restore symlink race

Published Feb 12, 2020 · Updated Aug 6, 2024

Privilege escalation in Sprite Software Spritebud 1.3.24 and 1.3.28 and Backup 2.5.4105 and 2.5.4108 allows local users to gain root privileges. During restoration, the root daemon follows an attacker-created symlink and writes a script path into /sys/kernel/uevent_helper. A malicious app must run locally while a crafted backup is restored; success lets the kernel execute attacker-selected code as root.
