CVE-2012-5362Network attack vector

Service interruption via Neighbor Solicitation flooding

Published Feb 20, 2020 · Updated Aug 6, 2024

Denial of service in Microsoft Windows 7 and earlier allows remote attackers to interrupt systems with an ICMPv6 Neighbor Solicitation flood. The IPv6 stack processes Neighbor Solicitation messages until a sustained flood exhausts resources; the public record identifies no narrower faulty routine or resource. No authentication or user interaction is required, but the target must process attacker-supplied IPv6 traffic, and the reported consequence is limited to service interruption.
