Unauthenticated command execution via unsanitized release parameter
Published Aug 5, 2025 · Updated Jul 28, 2026
OS command injection in Ångström Distribution Project Narcissus allows remote attackers to execute commands through backend.php. The script copies the release POST parameter into configure_image(), which interpolates it unescaped into a shell command passed to passthru(). No authentication or user interaction is required, and injected commands run with the web server account's permissions.
