CVE-2011-2487Network attack vector

Symmetric-key recovery via decryption oracle

Published Mar 11, 2020 · Updated Aug 6, 2024

Apache WSS4J before 1.6.5 allows remote attackers to recover encrypted symmetric keys via Bleichenbacher chosen-ciphertext queries. Its PKCS#1 v1.5 XML Encryption handling leaks whether decryption failed at the encrypted key or data stage, creating an oracle. Exploitation requires repeated access to a WS-Security endpoint using RSA v1.5 transport; recovered keys enable further attacks and primarily expose encrypted data.
