Code execution via overlong Phobos.Playlist Import string
Published Aug 21, 2025 · Updated May 15, 2026
Stack-based buffer overflow in AOL Desktop 9.5 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute code through a locally opened HTML file. The Phobos.Playlist Import() method copies an excessively long string into a fixed-size stack buffer without enforcing its bounds. Because the ActiveX control is not safe for scripting or initialization, the victim must open the file in the Local Machine Zone, and injected code runs with that user's privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
