Local share-mount access bypass via realpath race
Published Nov 23, 2022 · Updated Apr 25, 2025
Link-following in open-vm-tools 2009.03.18-154848 allows local users to bypass access restrictions on mounting shares. The mount.vmhgfs helper resolves a path with realpath and then uses it after a race window, allowing a symlink swap between validation and mounting. Exploitation requires local access and winning the race against the HGFS mount helper; successful abuse crosses intended filesystem access boundaries.
