Remote code execution via oversized IRC welcome reply
Published Aug 22, 2025 · Updated May 15, 2026
Stack-based buffer overflow in UFO: Alien Invasion 2.2.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted IRC 001 reply. The built-in IRC client parser processes an oversized numeric welcome response without validating its length, overflowing a stack buffer and corrupting control-flow data. Exploitation requires the game to be launched and its IRC client to connect to an attacker-controlled server; reply handling then needs no further interaction.
